A new program will begin soon at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center and you'll be able to gain some valuable knowledge while you have a little fun.

The Garden Program is teaming up with the Regional Science Consortium and creating Go Native Erie, thanks to a $64,000 federal grant. Funding is coming through the Great Lakes Restoration Fund, which has also funded other programs at TREC in the past.

Go Native Erie educates people on the difference between native species and the problems invasive species of plants can cause. With the existing garden program, there hasn't been enough funding to create new exhibits and education for visitors. A new exhibit inside TREC will be created to show effects of invasive species on the park. There will now be a self-guided tour around TREC's parking lot that represents what a native ecosystem looks like.

You'll see Go Native Erie out in the community as well as local greenhouses and nurseries set up native plant displays and signs to support the initiative.
