According to FBI data, violent crime rose by 12 percent in the first six months of 2013, that's in comparison to 2012.
Violent crimes include rape, aggravated assault, robbery, murder and manslaughter.
However, nationally those crimes went down when compared to crime in 2012.
Erie Police Chief Randy Bowers reports property crime is down significantly.
Bowers says the Erie Police Department is working to combat the crime rates with a new foot patrol this summer.
