Your Schools - Charter Schools

More and more groups and organizations are proposing the establishment of private charter schools, transferring state funding for education away from public schools and to the charter schools.  A charter school needs to the approval of the local public school board.  Now, there seems more opposition to expanding the number of chargter and cyber schools.  We look at why the growing demand for charter schools. What do they offer public schools don?t?  Is it a money maker?  Is it detrimental to public education?

A local developer has proposed a $150 development plan on Erie?s bayfront.  It will transform Erie?s water front near our convention center.  It features hotels, retail and office space, condos, town homes, and entertainment venues.  But this private development comes at a time when local public officials are moving forward with a publicly funded hotel next to the convention center.  The debate, should the public fund hotels and other projects that will remain off the tax rolls, to compete with private enterprise doing the same thing? We examine the plans, the costs and the arguments on both sides.
