Urban Garden Feeding Erie Community

June 21, 2013

One benefit of the UPMC Health Plan Donation to the Bayfront East Side Taskforce is that the
Urban Garden in Erie will expand and feed more members of the community. About 6 months ago, BEST started this venture, and now the vegetables and fruit are almost ready to eat. The brightly colored garden boxes on east 4th and Parade Streets are part of the Urban Garden. The boxes are individual gardens, taken care of by families who will be fed by what they grow. Next to the garden boxes stand blueberry bushes and this is called Operation Blueberry. The blueberries are almost ready, and members of the community are encouraged to come by and pick the berries to eat. Other locations around Erie are home to more community blueberry bushes, as well as other fruit plants, free for the picking. The Urban Garden is on the sight of what was formerly a blighted property. Now, volunteers proudly take care of the gardens.
