February 25, 2014- The wintry weather has ravaged some grape crops in Erie County, forcing some area growers to regroup.
Arrowhead Wine Cellars is working to pick up the pieces… And with spring still weeks away, it’s a difficult task.
According to Greg Ducharme with Arrowhead Wine Cellars, 90 percent of the delicate wine grapes have been destroyed.
He says the freeze, thaw; freeze weather pattern and record snow fall has made matters worse, putting the buds in jeopardy.
But over at Mason Farms, not all news is bad news...
Although some of their grapes are damaged, other crops appear to be flourishing at this point.
Mason says strawberries and raspberries are covered and protected.
Mason says the snow is helping with some of the perennials.
Farmers say at this point the outcome of the crops is a waiting game.
They tell us they won't know outcome of the crop until mid-summer.
