Health Report: New Treatments for COPD 4/23/2014

It's the third leading cause of death in the US, killing more than 130,000 Americans a year. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, called C-O-P-D, can literally take a person's breath away. The lungs become inflated and air is trapped.

Recently, doctors implanted tiny coils into patients lungs to shrink them and restore elasticity, and studies in Europe showed the experimental procedure improved lung function by 18 percent.

A lung flute is another new therapy for COPD. When patients blow, sound waves travel down the airways and mobilize mucus. Studies show using it twice a day, improves lung congestion.
