ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst baseball team had eight total award recipients for the 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Division All-Conference Awards, including seven players and head coach Joe Spano.
The Lakers swept the top individual awards for the PSAC West Division. Chris Gonzalez was named Athlete of the Year, Russell Lamovec was named Pitcher of the Year, Vincenzo Lucente was named Freshman of the Year, and Spano was chosen Coach of the Year.
In addition, Cameron Balego, Jimmy Latona, Drew Delsignore and Chris Vallimont received PSAC West First-Team honors. Gonzalez and Lamovec were also named First-Team All-PSAC West performers while Lucente made the All-PSAC West Second Team.
Gonzalez, a senior, started all 38 games for the Lakers at second base and center field. He finished the regular season with a conference-high .438 batting average (56-for-128) with 15 doubles, six home runs, 39 runs batted in, and 46 runs scored. He also had a .520 on-base percentage and a .695 slugging percentage.
Lamovec, a sophomore, had a conference-best eight wins to go with no losses in the regular season. He also sported a conference-best 1.48 earned-run average among starting pitchers. He threw 54 2/3 innings with three complete games, 72 strikeouts and just nine earned runs allowed.
Lucente held a 5-0 record in his rookie season with a 1.60 ERA. He struck out 37 batters in 33 2/3 innings pitched. He also had a team-high four complete games and allowed just six earned runs.
Balego, a senior, started all 38 games at shortstop and batted .384 (43-for-112) with a team-high 10 home runs, 44 RBI, 46 runs, and a conference-best .777 slugging-percentage. He also struck out just five times this season, the fewest among all qualified hitters in the PSAC.
Latona, a senior, started all 38 games in the outfield and batted .432 (57-for-132). He had a team-high 57 hits, including 15 doubles and eight home runs. He also drove in 29 runs while scoring 45. His on-base percentage was .510 and his slugging percentage was .735.
Delsignore, a junior, started all but one game for the Lakers as an outfielder and catcher. His regular season stat line included a .417 batting average (53-for-127), 12 doubles, eight home runs, 44 RBI, and a team-best 12 stolen bases. He also slugged .717.
Vallimont, a sophomore, owned a 6-1 record season record with a 2.72 ERA. Over 46 1/3 innings pitched, he struck out 79 batters for a 15.35 K/9 rating. He also had one complete game and held opposing hitters to a .171 batting average.
Spano wins his fourth PSAC West Coach of the Year award after leading the Lakers to a 34-4 overall record with a 21-3 mark in conference play. Mercyhurst was ranked first in multiple national polls throughout the season and held the top-spot in the NCBWA Atlantic Region rankings for ten-straight weeks.
