Edinboro's Staunch Thriving As Multi-Sport Athlete

West Middlesex star player excelling at both on college stage

EDINBORO, Pa. - He may be better known for helping open up running lanes as part of Edinboro's offensive front on Saturday's during the fall,
But one of Edinboro basketball's newest big men brings much more to the table.

Edinboro junior center Trey Staunch said, "In the back of my mind I was just saying I don't think it's time for me to let go and coach (Pat) Cleary gave the opportunity and just trying to take full advantage of it right now."

West Middlesex graduate Trey Staunch was a force in his high school hoops days leading the Big Reds to the PIAA state playoffs, but after a few years away from the court, he's back helping the Boro.

Staunch said, "being a multi-sport athlete, I think it really helps you going into the main sport that you're playing, but for them giving me the opportunity, I'm loving it right now."

Scoring a career high 14 points and pulling down four rebounds in a one-point loss at Mercyhurst, Staunch is fitting in on the interior.

Staunch said, "in high school I was always the biggest kid on the floor, but now I'm just an average-sized kid, everybody's six-eight, six-seven."

Edinboro senior guard Jaymon Mason said, "he brings that toughness, that grit I guess that a lot of us have, but he gives us that other type, that inside grit, you know, he's strong, he can score, he can shoot a little bit."

Although he admits it wasn't the easiest transition.

Staunch said, "it was rough the first couple weeks, you know, just the running and the pace of the game is so much faster."

Fellow football teammate Jon Girvin made the transition last year, and current Edinboro men's hoops assistant Chris Bess took a similar path in his heyday.

Staunch said, "I talked to Girv a lot, you know he said I think basketball could definitely help you in the football, because you're gonna be in great shape once you come back for spring."

For now, the Junior center is simply enjoying the ride.

Staunch said, "they brought me in with open arms, you know, it's probably been like the easiest transition I've ever had."
