The SeaWolves bats went silent on Monday night at Jerry Uht Park as they dropped the series opener to the Akron RubberDucks 10-1.
Akron jumped ahead in the top of the fourth inning against Erie starter Warwick Saupold. Joe Wendle reached on fielder’s choice, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a two-out Bryson Myles knock for a 1-0 lead.
The RubberDucks took control of the game in the top of the fifth. Jordan Smith led off with a single and stole second. With one out, Tyler Naquin grounded to short and beat out an errant throw for an infield single. The error allowed Smith to score for a 2-0 lead. Tyler Holt singled putting two on for Francisco Lindor who hit into a fielder’s choice for the second out. A walk to Bryan LaHair loaded the bases for Wendle who belted a grand slam over the wall in right for a 6-0 lead.
Akron added a run in the top of the sixth against reliever Will Startup when Holt knocked in Smith with his second hit of the game for a 7-0 lead.
The SeaWolves lone run came in the bottom of the seventh. Eugenio Suarez singled and was doubled over to third by Aaron Westlake. Suarez scored on a Dean Green groundout making it 7-1.
The RubberDucks extended their lead to 10-1 when LaHair nailed a three-run home run off of Nick Avila in the eighth.
Saupold (2-3) took the loss allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
