Erie could not get the bats going on Monday night at Prince George’s Stadium as they dropped the series opener to the Bowie Baysox 9-4.
Bowie jumped ahead in the last of the third against Erie starter Tommy Collier. Ronald Bermudez doubled with one out and scored on a Buck Britton single for a 1-0 lead.
The SeaWolves quickly took the lead in the top of the third against Bowie starter Tyler Wilson. With one out, Ramon Cabrera singled for his second hit of the night. Steven Moya followed and crushed a two-run home run, his second, to left-center for a 2-1 edge.
The lead was short lived as Dariel Alvarez homered with one out off of Collier in the bottom of the third, tying the game. Michael Ohlman walked and K.D. Kang singled putting two on with two outs for Garabez Rosa. Rosa grounded to third and Wade Gaynor errantly threw to second allowing Ohlman to score making it 3-2 Baysox.
Bowie added to its lead in the next two innings. In the fifth, Britton led off with a solo home run to right making it 4-2. Niuman Romero walked and advanced on a Christian Walker fly out. Chiang doubled home Romero making it 5-2.
In the sixth, the ‘Wolves turned to Nick Avila in the bullpen. Kang led off and reached on an Aaron Westlake error. Rosa singled and Bermudez hit into a fielder’s choice with Gaynor retiring Kang and third. Britton followed with his third hit of the day, loading the bases for Romero. Romero singled home a pair making it 7-2. Walker singled to reload the bases and Chaing singled home Britton and Romero making it 9-2.
In the ninth, Moya walked with one out and Gaynor doubled putting runners on second and third for Dean Green. Green grounded out to short, plating Moya making it 9-3. Corey Jones singled home Gaynor, closing the gap to five-runs, however, Erie would get no closer.
Collier (0-3) allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout in five innings of work.
