The SeaWolves five-game winning streak came to an end on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field as they dropped the middle game of a three-game series to the Portland Sea Dogs 5-1.
Portland jumped ahead in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Jeff Ferrell as Bo Greenwell belted a leadoff home run for a 1-0 lead. The Dogs would load the bases on Ferrell but the Erie hurler battled and struck out the next three hitters.
The Sea Dogs added a run in the third, going ahead 2-0. Jonathan Roof tripled with one out and scored on a Derrick Gibson single.
Portland starter Henry Owens was brilliant as he held the SeaWolves scoreless for eight innings, allowing just two hits and no more than one baserunner in an inning.
The Dogs added insurance runs against Guido Knudson in the eighth. Knudson worked two scoreless frames heading into the eighth but was touched up in his last frame of work. Keury De La Cruz led off with a double, Mike Brenly was hit by a pitch and Roof walked to load the bases. Gibson hit into a fielder’s choice plating De La Cruz for a 3-0 lead. With two outs and the bases loaded, Blake Swihart sent a popup in front of the plate off of reliever Kenny Faulk. Francisco Martinez lost the ball in the fog, fell down, and it allowed two runs to score for a 5-0 Sea Dogs lead.
Erie finally got on the board in the ninth against reliever Noe Ramirez. Devon Travis singled to right with one out, sending his hitting streak to nine straight. Steven Moya followed and extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games with a double off the wall in left, plating Travis making it 5-1. The ‘Wolves would get no closer.
Ferrell (4-5) took the loss allowing two runs on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts in five innings.
