The SeaWolves bats came alive early on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park but the offense could not push across enough runs as they dropped the series opener to the Trenton Thunder 6-4.
Trenton jumped ahead in the top of the first against Erie starter Tommy Collier. Mason Williams led off with a single, moved to second on a walk and scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
Erie tied the game in the bottom of the first off of Thunder starter Jeremy Bleich as Wade Gaynor blasted a solo home run to left.
The Thunder quickly regained the lead in the second. Taylor Dugas singled, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a Francisco Arcia single for a 2-1 lead.
Trenton extended its lead in the top of the third. Tyler Austin singled with one out and Dugas walked with two outs bringing up Dan Fiorito. Fiorito singled home Austin for a 3-1 edge. Arcia then doubled home Dugas and Fiorito for a 5-1 Thunder lead.
Erie cut into the lead in the bottom of the third. Jamie Johnson led off with a single to extend his hit streak to five straight games. Gaynor tripled home Johnson making it 5-2. Eugenio Suarez followed with his team-leading third home run making it a one-run game at 5-4. The SeaWolves would get no closer.
Trenton added a run in the fourth, taking a 6-4 lead and both bullpens would hold the opposition scoreless the remainder of the game.
Collier (0-1) allowed six runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts in four innings of work.
The SeaWolves will look to snap their four-game losing streak on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park at 6:35 p.m.
