Mercyhurst Women's Basketball Reaches NCAA Tourney

ERIE, Pa - Mercyhurst Women's Basketball Receives First NCAA Bid in 22 Years

ERIE, Pa. -- For the first time in 22 years, the Mercyhurst women's basketball team is an NCAA Tournament participant. The Lakers are the No. 5 seed in the Atlantic Region and will meet fellow Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference member Shippensburg in the opening round.

Mercyhurst finished with a 23-7 overall record and 17-5 mark in PSAC play to claim the West Division's third seed in the PSAC Tournament. The Lakers then played the program's first home playoff game since the 1994-95 season, defeating Clarion, 74-46, before falling at Indiana (Pa.), 78-61, in the PSAC Tournament quarterfinals.

Ironically, the women's basketball program's '94-95 team was honored at the most recent Mercyhurst Athletics Hall of Fame banquet in the summer of 2016. The current Lakers are one win short of the program's single-season wins record, which was also set by that '94-95 team, which went 24-6 while advancing to the Elite Eight.

The Atlantic Regional will take place at top-seed California (Pa.) on Mar. 10, 11 and 13. Check back for more updates.
