Whaley speaks for first time since Bills firing

Says draft room was "business as usual"

Doug Whaley appeared on SiriusXM NFL Radio Monday. It was his first public appearance since being fired by the Bills hours after the NFL Draft.

Whaley said he had no issues with Sean McDermott. The Bills draft functioned as normal, despite his impending doom.

"It was business as usual in that draft room and we all worked well together," Whaley said. "The draft the Bills had was reflective of that."

Whaley added he left the Bills a parting gift: two first round picks for next season.

He thinks McDermott will be good for Buffalo and quickly, though Whaley also seemed to take a subtle jab at Rex Ryan and possibly also Doug Marrone.

"(McDermott) will have them in position to win a lot of football games," Whaley said. "The Bills wont be beating themselves."

While there seemed to be angst regarding Rex, Whaley had nothing but praise for the Pegulas, calling them great owners and great people.

"There's nothing that we asked as personnel department that they said no to," Whaley said.

He made no excuses for his firing.

"This is a production based business and bottom line is we didn't produce enough wins."

Whaley says he's been recently re-connecting with family and possibly considering a job outside of football.

If he does return to run an NFL front office, the plan will be simple.

"If I get a shot again to be a GM in this league, I would make sure I secured a franchise QB, quickly," Whaley said.
