Otters Crush Mississauga; 17-0 in Home Games (12-11-13)

Otters Pound Steelheads 9-1 to Sweep Season Series

Erie, PA – The Erie Otters swept their season series with the Mississauga Steelheads Wednesday night in a 9-1 trouncing on a snow filled night that delayed the game an hour due to Mississauga’s late arrival.

The Mississauga Steelheads’ bus got caught in Wednesday night’s snow storm on their way to Erie and the hazardous road conditions forced the team to drive with caution to arrive safely close to 7 p.m. The opening faceoff took place at 8 p.m.

The Erie Otters weren’t fazed by the extra wait until the start of the game as it only took Dane Fox 68 seconds into the game to score his 37th goal of the season. Erie wasn’t done there as they went on to a six goal period, their biggest output in one period on the year. Michael Curtis notched his first of the night at 8:02. Then Travis Wood netted his first of the season midway through the period.

Bobby MacIntyre scored shorthanded to get Mississauga on the board. The Otters responded just 35 seconds later when Brendan Gaunce fired home his 13th of the year on the power play. Hayden Hodgson and Jake Evans picked up their third and seventh goals of the season, respectively. Erie led 6-1 in the first intermission.

The night got worse for Steelheads net minder Spencer Martin in the second period as he allowed three more goals to the Otters on just six shots. Fox, Gaunce, and Curtis all tallied their second goals of the game in the second period, giving Erie a 9-1 lead into the second intermission.

Oscar Dansk kept Mississauga off the board the rest of the way as he 18 saves in his 15th win of the year. Dane Fox brought his goal total up to 38 on the year to extend his OHL lead and extending his goal scoring streak to an OHL best eight games. Connor Brown also added three assists on the night to extend his OHL lead in the points race with a total of 65 on the year.

Erie will travel to Niagara tomorrow afternoon for a tilt with the IceDogs at 7 p.m. The Otters will be without Connor McDavid and Adam Pelech, who will join Team Canada’s Selection Camp Thursday.
