ERIE, Pa - The Otters were shut out on home ice tonight by the visiting Owen Sound Attack, 4-0. Daniel Murphy made 38 saves on 41 shots faced in net for a 0.927 save percentage. Kyle Maksimovich left the game early after taking a Slew Footing Match penalty in the 2nd that will likely garner a multi-game suspension.
The Otters started out strong in the 1st period, maintaining a lot of offensive zone time right off the bat. Olivier Lafreniere in net for the Attack robbed Patrick Fellows in the crease on a short breakaway just minutes into play. Unfortunately, the Otters could not maintain the pace with which they began the match.
The Otters’ game took a turn for the worse six minutes into the 2nd when Maksimovich was called for a Slew Footing Match penalty that sent him to the locker room for the remainder of the game. Lajeunesse also took a Slashing call on the play, giving the Attack a five-minute 5-on-3. One minute and 40 seconds into the PP, Brady Lyle scored to break the impasse and get the Attack on the scoreboard first. The Otters killed the remainder of the PP off, but the Attack held the Otters to just four shots on goal in the middle frame.
The 3rd period fell apart late for the Otters, as they simply could not solve Lafreniere. Jonah Gadjovich scored unassisted with a wrister from the right faceoff circle to widen the Attack’s lead to two goals with less than five minutes to go in regulation. Ethan Syzpula scored the empty net goal with a minute 35 left, and Mitchell Russell added insult to injury with the 4-0 dagger just 18 seconds later.
The Attack outshot the Otters 41-21 in the matchup, going 1/4 on the PP to the Otters’ 0/1.
The Otters see the Peterborough Petes this Saturday at the Erie Insurance Arena, 7pm puck drop, before heading north to Mississauga on Sunday for an afternoon game against the fish.
