The Akron Aeros plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning as they came from behind to beat the SeaWolves 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Canal Park.
The Aeros got on the board in the last of the first against Erie starter Victor Larez. Francisco Lindor led off with a single and stole second. Cedric Hunter doubled home Lindor for a 1-0 lead.
The SeaWolves responded in the top of the second against Akron starter Will Roberts. Ramon Cabrera led off with a walk and Tyler Collins singled putting two on for James McCann. McCann ripped a two-run double to left, giving Erie a 2-1 lead. McCann would later score on a Jamie Johnson double to right making it 3-1 Erie.
In the last of the second, Akron got one back. Tyler Holt led off, reached on a walk and stole second. He moved to third on a ground out by Jake Lowery and scored on a Matt Lawson groundout making it 3-2.
Erie went back ahead by two in the top of the fourth. With one out, Wade Gaynor doubled to left and came around to score on a two-out single by Johnson for a 4-2 lead.
Akron cut into the lead in the eighth. Lawson led off with a single and moved to second on a one-out walk. Ronny Rodriguez singled home Lawson making it a one-run game.
In the bottom of the ninth, reliever Will Clinard walked back-to-back hitters in Carlos Moncrief and Holt. Melvin Mercedes entered and struck out Jake Lowery for the first out before giving up back-to-back singles to Lawson and Kyle Bellows to bring home the game tying and winning runs.
Larez got the no-decision allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts in five innings of work.
The SeaWolves will continue the seven-game road trip at 7 p.m. on Thursday night in Altoona. RHP Patrick Cooper (2-7, 5.42 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Jameson Taillon (3-7, 3.75 ERA).
