SeaWolves Falter in Long's Erie Debut

Erie drops Sunday evening contest 6-3 in Akron against the Rubber Ducks

AKRON, OH. - The SeaWolves dropped their eighth straight game on Sunday night at Canal Park, falling to the Akron RubberDucks 6-3.

 

After a 1-2-3 first inning, the RubberDucks got to Erie starter Grayson Long in the second. Bobby Bradley led off the frame and connected on his 23rd home run of the season for a 1-0 lead. Yu Chang doubled and Dorssys Paulino then singled to put runners on the corners. Taylor Murphy singled home Chang to make it 2-0. Daniel Salters capped a three-run inning, sending a sacrifice fly to center, plating Paulino.

 

In the fourth, Akron added to its lead. Paulino led off with a single but was erased on a fielder’s choice from Murphy. Salters was then hit by a pitch, putting two on ahead of Yonathan Mendoza. Mendoza connected on a three-run home run to give the RubberDucks a 6-0 lead.

 

Erie closed the gap in the eighth against Akron reliever Mitch Brown. With one out, Logan Watkins singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. A.J. Simcox doubled home Watkins making it 6-1. DawelLugo followed with a base hit to put runners on the corner. A wild pitch plated Simcox from third making it 6-2. Erie then loaded the bases on a Christin Stewart walk and Gabriel Quintana single. Zack Cox grounded out to third, scoring Lugo to make it a 6-3 game, but the ‘Wolves would not get any closer.

 

Robbie Aviles retired the final two batters of the eighth and worked a perfect ninth, earning his third save.

 

Akron starter Matt Whitehouse (8-8) earned the win tossing six scoreless frames. He walked one and struck out five.

 

Long (0-1) took the loss in his Erie debut. He allowed six runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts in four innings.

 

Tyler Alexander pitched in relief of Hall and worked four scoreless innings, striking out five batters in his final appearance of the season.

 

The SeaWolves and Ducks wrap up the 2017 season on Monday at 1:05 p.m. Righty Franklin Perez makes his Tigers organization debut for the SeaWolves. Perez was acquired in the Justin Verlader trade on August 31. RHP Shane Bieber (2-1, 2.42 ERA) will get the start for the RubberDucks.
