The SeaWolves snapped an eight-game losing streak, finishing the 2017 season with a thrilling 3-2 win over the Akron RubberDucks on Monday.
Erie struck first in the second against Akron starter Shane Bieber. Dawel Lugo led off with a single and moved to third on a Gabriel Quintana double. Lugo scored on an A.J. Simcox double for a 1-0 lead.
The ‘Wolves extended the lead in the third. Logan Watkins led off with a three-base error and scored on a Harold Castro sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Akron got on the board against Erie starter Sandy Baez in the fourth as Yu Chang led off with a solo home run to left center making it 2-1.
The RubberDucks then tied the game in the fifth. Todd Hankins led off with a bunt and an errant throw allowed Hankins to reach to third. Dorssys Paulino singled home Hankins for the game-tying run.
Erie regained the lead in the seventh against reliever Jacob Lee. Quintana led off with a single and he moved to third on a Steven Moya double. Quintana came in to score on a Tim Remes sacrifice fly for a 3-2 advantage.
Jeff Thompson (1-0) earned the win for the SeaWolves in relief. He tossed two scoreless innings in his Double-A debut allowing two hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Lee (1-1) took the loss in relief for the Ducks. He allowed a run on two hits with no walks and a strikeout in 0.2 innings.
Mark Ecker earned his third save tossing two scoreless innings in relief of Thompson. Akron loaded the bases in the ninth inning and Steven Moya made a game-saving catch at the wall in right.
Baez took the no-decision allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with four walks and eight strikeouts in five innings.
Bieber also took a no-decision allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts in six innings.
