The SeaWolves snapped a two-game slide as they took down the New Britain Rock Cats 9-2 on Friday night at New Britain Stadium.
Erie jumped ahead in the top of the second against Rock Cats starter Adrian Salcedo. Dean Green singled with one out and moved to third on a Corey Jones double. Aaron Westlake walked to load the bases for Dixon Machado. Machado grounded to short and on an throwing error by Jorge Polano, two runs scored for a 2-0 lead.
The Cats tied the game in the last of the second against Erie starter Buck Farmer. With two outs, Stephen Wilkins singled and scored on a Matt Koch two-run home run.
The SeaWolves regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning against reliever Ryan O’Rourke when Devon Travis nailed a solo home run, his eighth, to straight away center for a 3-2 lead.
In the seventh, Jones led off on an error and Aaron Westlake singled putting two on for Machado. Machado sacrificed the runners in to scoring position for Craig Albernaz. Albernaz laid down a squeeze bunt, scoring Jones for a 4-2 lead. Jason Krizan followed and snapped a three-game hitless streak, knocking home Westlake for a 5-2 lead
In the eighth, Green walked with one out and Westlake walked with two outs bringing up Machado. Machado laced a double to the alley in right, plating both runners for a 7-2 lead. Machado finished with a three-RBI night.
Erie would add two more runs in the ninth. Krizan led off with a double off the wall in center. Marcus Lemon followed and lifted a line drive to left, on a Tony Thomas error, Krizan scored and Lemon reached second. Travis singled home Lemon with his third hit of the night for a 9-2 lead.
Farmer (1-0) earned the win in his Double-A debut. The righty allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Bryan Augenstein tossed a perfect seventh and eighth while Jose Valdez threw a perfect ninth. The three Erie pitchers combined to not allow a hit over the final seven innings of the game.
