The SeaWolves used late-game dramatics on Monday night to take the series opener from the Portland Sea Dogs 8-7 at Jerry Uht Park.
The ‘Wolves jumped ahead in the bottom of the first inning against Sea Dogs starter Keith Couch. With two outs, Devon Travis walked and moved into scoring position on a Steven Moya knock. Ramon Cabrera knocked home Travis for a 1-0 lead.
The ‘Wolves added to the lead in the second. Dean Green singled to left with one out and scored on a Dixon Machado double for a 2-0 edge. Machado came home on a Jamie Johnson knock for a 3-0 lead and Johnson scored on a two-out Travis single for a 4-0 advantage.
Erie extended the lead in the fourth. Johnson led off and tripled down the right field line. He scored on a Jason Krizan sacrifice fly to left making it 5-0. With one out, Travis doubled and was brought home by Moya for a 6-0 lead. Cabrera followed with his second RBI hit of the night, a double plating Moya making it 7-0.
The Dogs charged back in the fifth against Erie starter Jeff Ferrell. With two outs in the inning, Heiker Meneses walked and Jonathan Roof singled putting two on base for Devin Marrero. Marrero singled home Meneses and Roof scored on an error making it 7-2. Blake Swihart and Sean Coyle followed with back-to-back home runs making it 7-5.
Portland tied the game in the top of the seventh against reliever Ryan Robowski. Roof led off and homered to left making it a one-run game. Marrero followed with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly making it a 7-7 game.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth inning. Moya led off against reliever Robby Scott. He worked a 2-0 count before crushing a majestic home run into the Erie night. His 14th long ball of the season gave the ‘Wolves an 8-7 win.
Bryan Augenstein (2-1) earned the win tossing 2.1 hitless innings in relief with no walks and four strikeouts.
