PSU's "Spider" Looks Back

Equipment manager Brad "Spider" Caldwell retires after 31 years with team.
STATE COLLEGE - A long-time staple of Penn State football is finishing his final week with the Nittany Lions.

Brad Caldwell, better known as “Spider,” will retire as the team's equipment manager Friday.

Spider spent 31 years with the PSU equipment staff, starting as a student manager in 1983.

He built bonds with countless players over the years, with many reaching out to Spider in his final weeks.

"I just wanted to treat everybody the same,” he says of his approach to the job. “Whether it was a walk-on or a superstar. The same gear, the same everything. Because if he's here, I want to respect him. That's how I want to be respected that's how I want to respect him."

Spider, a Curwensville, Pa. native, will now move full time with his wife, Karen, to their vacation home in Vermont where he'll be a high school A.D.
