Kyle Lobstein was sharp on Tuesday night in Trenton, but the bats never heated up as the SeaWolves dropped the series opener to the Thunder 4-1 at Arm & Hammer Park.
Trenton struck for a pair in the bottom of the first against Lobstein. With two outs, Tyler Austin doubled to right and scored on a Kyle Roller single. Roller advanced to second on an error and moved to third on a passed ball. He scored on a Jose Pirela base hit making it 2-0 Thunder.
Trenton added to its lead in the fifth against Lobstein. Walter Ibarra led off with a double and he came hoe on a two-run home run from Ramon Flores making it 4-0. Flores homered for the second time in three games.
Erie cut into the lead in the top of the sixth with their lone run of the game. With two outs and Eugenio Suarez on first, Hernan Perez singled to center putting runners on the corners. The single extended Perez hit streak to a season-high 11 straight games. He equals Tyler Collins for the longest hitting streak by a SeaWolves batter this season. Perez stole second and on an errant throw to second, Suarez scored from third making it 4-1.
The 'Wolves would get no closer as Nik Turley, the games original starter, tossed five solid innings in relief. He held Erie hitless over the final three innings of the game.
Lobstein (5-3) tossed his second complete game of the season but came out on the losing end. He allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits with a walk while tying a season-high with eight strikeouts in eight innings of work. Two of Lobstein's three losses have come against Trenton.
The SeaWolves and Thunder meet in the middle game of the series on Wednesday morning at 10:35 a.m. RHP Patrick Cooper (2-4, 4.75 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Zach Nuding (1-6, 3.48 ERA).
