Community Remembers the Good Times

Following the destructive early morning fire at Conneaut Lake Park, community reflects on the park, and wonder what's next.
August 1, 2013 - A smoky haze sits atop Conneaut Lake Park following a destructive early morning fire that completely burned down the Dockside and the Beach Club, two very popular attractions.

Audie Hays has lived in the area since 1957 and he said he can't believe that another fire has happened at the park: a place his entire family loves.

"We've been coming here for a long time. You just hate to see it,” said Hays.

Hays is not alone in his disbelief and shock.

"I could've cried about this. It's devastating," said Dave Cole, of New Castle, who visits the park often.

"I'm sick. It's sickening. I got about maybe an hour of sleep because my nerves are totally shot," said Mike Saletra, who lives in Conneaut Lake.

People gathered to look at the damage from the early morning fire, and now a community is left to wonder: what's next for the park?

Is this fire the type of setback that will prevent the park from bouncing back? Or can it rebuild? A community is torn.

"I'm hoping they can rebuild. Get some interest in here, and people will donate some money for it," said Deborah Mailliard, who lives in Conneaut Lake.

"We all wanted to see it survive, but stuff like this doesn't help us one bit," said Hays.
