Fill the Boot Campaign

Drivers around Erie today saw some new toll roads, but these tolls were voluntary for those who want to help find a cure for muscular dystrophy.

This is an annual event thats always "given the boot."

In this case, the boots belong to Erie fighters, but they weren't stuffing their feet into the boots, they were stuffing cash instead.

You could find them at intersections or in front of businesses.

Erie firefighters were out and about today with their boots, not on their feet, but filling them with cash.

MDA Coordinator at the Erie Fire Department Maria Pastewka says, This is our main fundraiser. We help the children. When you meet the ambassadors it really touches you heart.

Even though the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon isn't until Labor Day, the firefighters got an early start with their annual "Fill the Boot Campaign."

Close to 90 firefighters hit the streets today, many of them retired, but that didn't keep them from getting back in uniform and hitting the streets.

Bill Vahey, a retired Deputy Chief Erie Fire Department says, It's a good organization and charitable, it hits young people with a terrible crippling disease and adults too. Any way we can help, we're glad to help.

Last year, Erie firefighters raised more than $15,000 for MDA, and of course, they hope to raise even more this year thanks to your generosity.

This years MDA Telethon kicks off at 6pm on Sunday, September 4th. Of course, once again, JET-TV's Sean Lafferty and Kim Thomas will be your local hosts.
