Matt has always enjoyed sports, so when he realized he could get paid to cover sporting events and tell stories about athletics, what he wanted to do with his career became clear.

Matt grew up in Zanesville, Ohio and graduated from Tri-Valley High School, where he was a member of the school's first football team to make the state playoffs in 2006. He was also active in Tri-Valley's Ski Club and got his first live "on-air" experience delivering the school's announcements every morning and afternoon during his senior year.

From there, Matt went to The Ohio State University, where he earned a degree in journalism with a minor in media production and analysis. At OSU, Matt spent his senior year as Multimedia Editor of The Lantern, the school's award-winning student newspaper. This afforded Matt the opportunity to cover Ohio State football and basketball as a writer and photographer. In April 2011, Matt wrote a story regarding a former OSU football player's plans during the NFL lockout that gained national attention.

Matt also interned as WKRC in Cincinnati and WCMH in Columbus during his time as a Buckeye.

After graduating from OSU in June of 2012, Matt joined the WHIZ Sports Team in Zanesville, Ohio. Just six months later, he made the move to Erie to join WJET, WFXP and its sports department. His favorite aspect of the job is the atmosphere of Friday night football games.  If you have a great sports story Matt should tell, contact him at medwards@wjettv.com
