Meadville Native Palmiero-Winters Conquers Running World (7-9-13)

Amputee Raced 70-Hours in Vermont
IT'S BEEN 19 YEARS SINCE A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT CHANGED AMY PALMIERO-WINTERS' LIFE.
SIXTEEN YEARS SINCE DOCTORS AMPUTATED HER LEFT LEG JUST BELOW THE KNEE.
BUT AMY'S TURNED HER LIFE WITH A PROSTHETIC INTO A PERSONAL SUCCESS STORY.
FIRST AS A MARATHON RUNNER - THEN TO ULTRA MARATHONS.  AND MOST RECENTLY-
TO THE SIMPLY INSANE - THE SPARTAN DEATH RACE IN THE MOUNTAINS OF VERMONT.

THE RACE TURNED INTO MORE THAN 70 HOURS OF PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHALLENGES.  INCLUDING HOURS OF CHOPPING WOOD AND BUILDING
A MILE-LONG STONE STAIRCASE ONE THOUSAND FEET UP A MOUNTAIN.
THAT DOESN'T BEGIN TO TELL THE STORY.
PALMIERO-WINTERS BEGAN RUNNING AS A YOUNGSTER- EVENTUALLY FOR MEADVILLE HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY.
EVEN AFTER LOSING MOST OF HER LEFT LEG- SHE'S GONE ON TO SET WORLD RECORDS AND WIN SOME OF THE NATION'S TOP AWARDS.
BUT SIXTY PLUS HOURS INTO HER LATEST CHALLENGE- AMY LEARNED SHE'D
MISSED THE CUT-OFF TO OFFICIALLY FINISH THE RACE.
WITH A LITTLE CONVINCING- AMY'S NEXT TEST WAS TO MAKE IT DOWN
MOUNTAIN IN THIRTY MINUTES.  A MOUNTAIN THAT HAD TAKEN HER TWO HOURS TO CLIMB.
BUT LIKE SO MANY TIMES BEFORE- SHE CAME OUT ON TOP.
AND WHILE SHE DIDN'T BRING HOME A MEDAL. . .AND ISN'T EVEN LISTED AMONG THE OFFICIAL FINISHERS, AMY PALMIERO-WINTERS FOUGHT TO THE END.  AND SHE WON.
COMING UP TOMORROW- AMY LOOKS BACK ON THE ACCIDENT THAT TOOK HER LEG AND WHAT SHE HAS DONE TO TURN IT INTO A POSITIVE FOR HERSELF AND FOR SO MANY OTHERS.
