National Night Out Big Success in Erie

Hundreds of people take part in Erie's 15 events to celebrate National Night Out.
August 6, 2013 - It's been a busy night across the city of Erie with 15 National Night Out events taking place at various locations.

However, no matter the location, the purpose of the nationwide celebration remained the same.

The event is an opportunity to celebrate the community, a time to look at all of the good things going on in the area, and a time to educate the younger generations and show them that violence doesn't have to be a part of their lives.

This is the second year Erie has taken part in the national event, and this year had an added twist: a one hundred year rededication ceremony of the Captain Charles Vernon Gridley monument, located on Erie's west side.

"It's been 100 years. A lot of people pass this monument everyday and they're not very familiar with the background and the part of Erie history that Captain Gridley played," said Erie mayor Joe Sinnott.
