Two Out Runs Send Erie to Defeat

The SeaWolves ran into a hot Akron offense on Monday night at Canal Park as the Aeros scored 12 two-out runs en route to a 12-4 win over the SeaWolves.
 
Erie jumped ahead on Akron starter Matt Packer in the top of the second inning. Brandon Douglas reached on a one-out error and moved into scoring position on a James Robbins knock. Wade Gaynor doubled down the left field line, plating both baserunners for a 2-0 lead. Gaynor scored on a Eugenio Suarez single making it 3-0.
 
The Aeros responded in the bottom of the second against Erie starter Drew VerHagen. Kyle Bellows singled with two outs and moved to second on a wild pitch. Matt Lawson singled home Bellows making it 3-1. Tyler Holt singled home Bellows making it a one-run game at 3-2.
 
Akron continued it's two-out barrage in the fifth. Ronny Rodriguez double and Cedric Hunter was hit by a pitch, putting two on for Jesus Aguilar. Aguilar doubled home Rodriguez, tying the game. Carlos Moncief doubled home Hunter and Aguilar for a 5-3 lead.
 
Akron put the game away in the bottom of the eighth. Moncrief led off with a walk off of reliever Kelvin Perez. With two outs, the 'Wolves brought in Tyler Stohr and he promptly gave up back-to-back singles to Bellows and Lawson making it 6-3. It was the first two of seven straight hits allowed by Stohr. Holt and Rodriguez each singled in runs making it 8-3. Hunter doubled home a pair for a 10-3 lead. Aguilar and Moncrief each singled home a pair capping a seven-run innings and a 12-3 Akron lead.
 
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Jamie Johnson doubled and was brought home on a Suarez knock to make it 12-4. Erie would get no closer.
 
VerHagen (2-3) allowed five runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
 
The SeaWolves and Aeros meet in the middle game of the series on Tuesday night at Canal Park at 7:05 p.m. RHP Warwick Saupold (4-3, 2.96 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Brett Brach (5-5, 4.99 ERA).
