Gannon's Hammermill Center Ready for Action After Fire Damages the Building

Crews put in long hours to get the gym ready for the Golden Knights and the Burger King Classic.
January 14, 2014 - Gannon University's Hammermill Center was severely damaged by fire last month.

Crews put in long hours to get the gym ready for the Golden Knights and the Burger King Classic.

The good news is that the Gannon men’s and women’s basketball teams will be able to host IUP at home Wednesday night.

That also means the facility will be ready for the Burger King Classic this weekend.

Fire and heavy smoke damaged the Hammermill Center on December 23rd.

Officials say the fire was electrical in nature, sending smoke through five buildings on campus that are connected.

Gannon holds fire insurance on their buildings, helping them fund the renovations and take care of the aftermath.

In just 21 days, the Hammermill Center had a complete face lift, including new paint, a new sound system and new lighting

The teams got back on the floor for the first time today after spending many practices at the Penn State Behrend Junker Center.

During the cleanup, one of the toughest parts of the process was cleaning the ceiling.

It was a detailed process that officials say had to be on time every step of the way.

Gannon will host IUP Wednesday night with the women playing at 5:30pm and the men at 7:30pm.
