May 30th, 2013

James Barrett of Erie is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and the Korean War. He enlisted in 1949 and was sent to Korea to work on F-86 fighter jets, serving as crew chief for famed ace Colonel James Jabara.

Jim was originally given notice to sign up for the Army, but reported to the recruiters office with a different plan.

James Barrett, USAF vet/hometown hero says: "I had relatives that had been in the Air Force and I'm an airplane freak to start with. That's why I wanted to get in the airplanes and go that route.

After leaving the Air Force in 1952, Jim's service to the public was just beginning.  He would join the Millcreek Police Department, serving 33 years there and also as a volunteer firefighter. He's also a husband and great grandfather.
