Ice Dune Safety Warning from DCNR

The ice dunes are just taking shape right now, but will build quickly if cold weather continues
January 1, 2014

The ice dunes off the beaches off Presque Isle are starting to form, and park officials want to keep you safe. DCNR rangers see quite a few people each year climbing on the ice dunes, although most are from out of town. The ice dunes are just taking shape right now, but will build quickly if cold weather continues. The ice forms over the water, not the sand. The dunes have a slick, rigid surface, creating a dangerous situation with the cold water temperature. The ice dunes are hollow, making it easier to fall through into the water.
