July 26, 2013 - Remote-controlled robots took the water this afternoon and they were operated by kids as young as 12-years-old.
Ten students in the College for Kids Program at Penn State Behrend took a course in underwater robotics this week.
They visited Waldameer and the research vessel Environaut to test their robots before taking them to the pool for their first deepwater excursion. The project was hands-on and allowed the students to be creative.
"This was a from-scratch project kit,” said David Boughton, a member of Pa. Sea Grant, a group that collaborates with the university. “We had a design we used and we've made some adaptations and we've allowed the students to do some innovation here too. We wanted to let their creative minds pitch in on the design and they've done a fabulous job.”
The week-long program used a STEM-based curriculum.
