Erie started a five game series with Bowie off the right way, dominating the Baysox with pitching en route to a 4-0 victory.
Erie starter Matt Crouse (6-8, 4.05) picked up the win behind a career effort. Using 93 pitches, Crouse shut out the Baysox for eight innings. The starter’s longest outing of the year combined quick outs with four strikeouts to give the SeaWolves all the time necessary to put up runs.
Crouse was given an early cushion as all scoring occurred within the first three innings of the game. In the first, Eugenio Suarez doubled with one out. Daniel Fields’ RBI double not only gave Erie the lead at 1-0, but it extended Fields’ hit streak to six games which is a season high for the center fielder. The SeaWolves tacked on another run in the opening frame when Ramon Cabrera’s single down the right field line scored Fields to make it 2-0.
Erie added two more runs in the third. Fields reached on a leadoff walk and reached second when Cabrera singled. The two SeaWolves then successfully executed a double steal to put both runners in scoring position. Brandon Douglas doubled in both base runners with two outs to cap Erie’s lead at 4-0.
Crouse’s dominant performance only saw four Bowie batters reach base. David Kopp worked the ninth with two strikeouts to complete Erie’s win.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow night as Kelvin Perez (0-0, 6.14) and Mike Wright (8-2, 3.61 ERA) take the hill. The first 1,000 fans through the gates of Jerry Uht Park will receive Bruce RondonBobblehead.
