The SeaWolves snapped a six-game losing streak at Arm & Hammer Park with an 11-4 win over the Trenton Thunder on Monday night.
Erie got on the board in the top of the first against Trenton starter Shane Greene. Eugenio Suarez singled with one out and scored on a Hernan Perez double down the left field line for a 1-0 lead.
Trenton took the lead in the fourth against Erie starter Patrick Cooper, who was making his first start since May 29. Tyler Austin and Kyle Roller each singled with one out putting runners on the corners for Carmen Angelini. Angelini singled to bring home Austin, tying the game. Andrew Clark followed with single, scoring Roller for a 2-1 Trenton lead. With two outs, Jose Pirela plated a pair on a double to left for a 4-1 Thunder edge.
The lead did not last long for Trenton as the 'Wolves jumped back ahead in the top of the fifth. James Robbins led off with a single. Luis Castillo followed and sent a ground ball to first and on the play, Roller's throw to second was wide allowing both runners to reach safely. Marcus Lemon laid down a bunt to move the runners over that he beat out for an infield single, loading the bases. Jamie Johnson followed by nailing a first pitch fastball to the alley in right, scoring a pair, making it a 4-3 game. Suarez walked to reload the bases for Perez. Perez was hit by a pitch, bringing home the games tying run. James McCann and Tyler Collins followed with consecutive sacrifice flies to plate a pair for a 6-4 'Wolves lead.
In the seventh, Suarez led off with a double for his second hit of the game and he was moved to third on a Perez knock. McCann brought home Suarez with his second sacrifice fly of the game making it 7-4 Erie.
In the eighth, Erie loaded the bases on reliever Rigoberto Arrebato. Robbins and Castillo each singled. Lemon laid down a bunt but the Thunder retired Robbins at third. Johnson followed and drew his team-leading 51st walk. Suarez brought home Castillo with his third hit, an infield single to the left side. With two outs, McCann singled home Lemon making it 9-4.
The SeaWolves added two more runs in the ninth. Castillo drew a two-out walk and Lemon singled to put a pair on for Johnson. Johnson singled to left scoring Castillo for a 10-4 lead. Lemon would score on a wild pitch to cap the nights scoring at 11-4.
Three Erie relievers, Will Startup, Tyler Clark and Ryan Robowski combined to hold Trenton scoreless over the final 5.1 innings of the game. Startup (3-1) allowed one hit with a strikeout in 2.1 innings of work earning the win.
Cooper took the no-decision allowing four runs on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
The SeaWolves and Thunder meet in the middle game of the series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Victor Larez (6-3, 4.89 ERA) takes the mound for the 'Wolves against RHP Michael Pineda (MLB Rehab).
