The SeaWolves rebounded from a series opening loss as they took down the Akron Aeros 5-2 on Tuesday night at Canal Park.
The 'Wolves jumped ahead in the top of the first inning on Akron starter Brett Brach. Jamie Johnson led off and reached on an error. Eugenio Suarez belted a two-run home run, his sixth, for a 2-0 Erie lead.
In the fourth, Daniel Fields led off with a single and moved to third on a Ramon Cabrera base hit. Tyler Collins grounded into a fielder's choice, plating Fields for a 3-0 lead.
Akron responded against Erie starter Warwick Saupold in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Carlos Moncrief tripled off the wall in right center and scored on a Ronny Rodriguez base hit making it 3-1.
Saupold, making his first start since June 11, allowed a run on five this with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings of work in a no-decision.
The SeaWolves added to the lead in the seventh to go back ahead by three runs. James McCann led off and singled to right and advanced to second on a passed ball. McCann moved to third on a James Robbins groundout and scored on a passed ball making it 4-1.
Erie added a run in the top of the eighth against reliever Shawn Armstrong. Johnson led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a Suarez fly out. Fields singled home Johnson for a 5-1 lead.
Akron got one back in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Melvin Mercedes. Moncrief led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Rodriguez sacrifice fly making it 5-2. Akron would get no closer as Mercedes retired the final two hitters to preserve the Erie win.
Tyler Clark (1-0) was superb in relief of Saupold tossing three scoreless innings earning his first win of the season. Clark walked one and struck out two allowing two hits.
The SeaWolves go for the series win on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. RHP Victor Larez (6-7, 5.03 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Will Roberts (6-7, 4.30 ERA).
