Ramon Garcia stepped up in a big way for the SeaWolves on Thursday night at Metro Bank Park as the Erie starter held the Harrisburg Senators at bay as the ‘Wolves took the series opener 4-1.
Erie broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning against Senators starter A.J. Cole. Cole had retired the first nine batters he faced before giving up a leadoff single to Jamie Johnson. With one out, Daniel Fields tripled home Johnson for a 1-0 lead. Ramon Cabrera singled to right, scoring Fields for a 2-0 lead. With two outs, James McCann doubled Cabrera over to third. Cabrera scored on a wild pitch making it 3-0.
Harrisburg got on the board in the seventh against Garcia. Carlos Rivero led off with a double, moved to third on a Sean Nicol groundout and scored on a Jerad Head groundout.
The Senators threatened against Justin Souza in the eight getting two on base, however Souza worked out of the jam by striking out Justin Bloxom.
Erie added an insurance run in the top of the ninth against Richie Morowski. Fields led off with a single and moved to second on a Cabrera knock. Fields moved to third on a Tyler Collins flyout and scored on a McCann sacrifice fly for a 4-1 lead.
Melvin Mercedes worked a perfect ninth inning earning his 11th save.
Garcia (1-4) earned his first win since July 5 at Toledo. He allowed a run on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
The SeaWolves and Senators meet in the second game of a four game series on Friday night at Metro Bank Park at 7 p.m. RHP Warwick Saupold (7-5, 3.18 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Taylor Hill (2-6, 2.18 ERA).
