Tom Atkins joined the JET Pinpoint Weather team of meteorologists in January 1995 as a weekend meteorologist and now anchors the weathercast on the weeknight evening and late news shows.
Tom was born in Baltimore and grew up in New York and New Jersey where his weather interest was sparked at a young age when his parents bought him a weather station for his 6th birthday. He was one of those kids that was fascinated by stormy weather and loved to watch the weather portion of the news with his dad every night.
At the age of 15, he got his first weather job, working for a private forecasting company at Newark Airport in New Jersey. He went to Iowa State University to study meteorology and broadcast journalism and also worked for a private weather forecasting company in Iowa through his college career. He got his first television weather job at WHO-TV in Des Moines and managed to chase tornadoes in his spare time.
In 1988 Tom moved to Erie to forecast the weather at WSEE-TV, highly motivated by the lake effect snows of this area. Now at WJET and WFXP, he enjoys doing 6 weather forecasts a day, plus a Weather 101 educational segment on the evening news. Tom also teaches meteorology at Penn State Behrend and enjoys speaking engagements throughout the area , as well as forecasting for radio stations Star 104, Rocket 101, JET 1400, WCTL, Z1023, WYVL and The Fan.
In 1996 he married his wife Janet, a lifelong Erie resident, and they enjoy life here in Northwest Pennsylvania with their new snow dog Junebug and the Christmas cat Tike.
