Five ‘Gateways’ planned for downtown Erie, the first to be installed this year

It’s a project that will give visitors to the city a welcome and a history lesson at the same time.

The first of five gateways will be located at 3rd and State streets by the end of this year.  Right now, it’s just on paper, but the Gateway Project will soon take up space there.

There will be special cubes with facades that will be able to be changed with different messages.  The Downtown Development Partnership has worked closely with the city to come up with the design.

CEO of Erie Downtown Partnership, John Buchna, says, “Here’s an opportunity we have at 3rd and State Street and, working with the city, we’re looking to improve that section of State Street. For those coming up State Street, you’ve arrived you’re in our downtown from the north.”

The project will depict messages about Erie’s heritage and history.
