Community for Unity and Opportunity have put together ‘Erie Day at the Mel Blount Youth Home’.
200 children from community centers in the area have received exclusive invitations to this event at Mel Blount Youth Home in Claysville, PA. The housing facility is a 303 acre ranch for at-risk teens in the Pittsburgh community. The kids will participate in physical fitness activities, team building activities, developing relationships and improving communication skills. There will be role-models to assist the children on their direction and paths in life.
The event was thought up by individuals who “don’t have a social status or a center, but are willing to take a risk to bring something new to the community,” says Deonte Cooley, Event Organizer and Volunteer Coordinator. Thanks to these folks, the kids will head out to this all-day event in just a few days, on Friday, August 11th!
According to Get Connected Erie’s website, The Community for Unity and Opportunity Organization is a “group of community members that believe it takes a village to raise a child. We believe the word ‘community’ in its own definition has begun to fade, and action needs to be taken to rejuvenate the Urban Youth and businesses in America… Community for Unity and Opportunity is a grass roots movement and organization that looks to provide consultation services and experiences to Urban community members that assists in networking and promoting character development.”
The Mel Blount facility is equipped with basketball courts, two lakes stocked with fish, a ropes and fitness course, and open space for various activities. To learn more about the facility, please visit MelBlount.org.
