Multiple cars ending up getting stuck or off the road because of the snow, but there is an app that will help you avoid these slippery situations.
President of Transportation Solutions, Brenda Bennett, advises, “…Slow down and back off!” Two driving tips to keep in the back of your mind when that lake effect snow starts to fly. “There’s no such thing as, ‘I’ll wait until the weather clears’. We could have days of bad weather so you really want to embrace where we live.”
But following driving tips isn’t the only thing that can keep you safe this winter. The app 511 PA is Pennsylvania’s official travel information service from PennDOT. And, Assistant County Manager of PennDOT, Tom Mello, says, “It’ll show you cameras, it’ll show you live-time plows… where they’re at, and where they’ve been, road conditions… If there’s any alerts out there, any emergencies, and if there’s any road closures.”
The app is designed to help motorists reach their destination in the most efficient manner while traveling across the state. “It’s a great tool to use if you’re traveling, especially in the winter time with conditions that change in Pennsylvania as much as they do here,” says Mello.
Apart from getting detailed information off of the geo-grid map, you can utilize 14 live-feed cameras across the Erie County area. “We update our cameras every 5 seconds on the feed so that it’s real-time information.”
And another really helpful feature for when that snow first falls is called ‘Follow the Plow’. On the app you can find where the PennDOT plows are located, and that’s not all; you can also find out what roads those plows have already taken care of. “We have AVL technology in all of our plows now. It’s real-time information.”
Between the 511 PA app and basic driving safety, you should be getting around a little more smoothly this winter. Downloading it is as easy as searching, ‘511 PA’ in the app store and clicking the ‘get’ button. The app is free, user-friendly, and most importantly, it will help you out this winter.
