After 28 years of running summer program, ‘Spoon’ looks to pass the torch

A long-time basketball league for inner-city kids could be looking at a change in the future.  Melvin Witherspoon has been running the ‘Spoon’s Summer Basketball League’ for 28 years, but says the time is coming to pass the torch.

At today’s City Council meeting, Witherspoon suggested handing the program over to the city to create a city-run ‘Summer Recreation League’.  Witherspoon has two more years on council.  He says after that, he would like to retire from the game while making sure it’s still a functioning program for the kids who rely on the league each summer.

Witherspoon says, “the kids know it’s Spoons’ league, we just have someone else running it, and therefore, we can [get] college students jobs when they come back home we will have something going on continuously and hopefully, it lasts forever”.

‘Spoon’ says this is the first time he has brought the idea up to council or the mayor, so there is a lot of work moving forward to make this a reality.
