Monday June 5, 2017 – Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook says 26-year-old Anita Jones died of consequences of ligature strangulation and has ruled her death a homicide.
Jones was found Friday morning in her apartment in the 2700 block of Holland Street bound and unresponsive.
She died late Saturday night at Saint Vincent Hospital.
Erie Police continue the investigation, talking to neighbors and obtaining surveillance video. Jones’ two young children were at home at the time of the incident, but were not harmed. The children have been interviewed by police and staff at the Children’s Advocacy Center and are now in the care of family.
Jones recently moved into the area of East 27th and Holland Street and neighbors say she kept her herself.
We spoke with her former foster mother and foster sister who says Anita lived a very troubled life, and had been in and out of foster care since she was a toddler.
Velma Palochak took Anita in at the age of eleven and cared for her as if she was her own child. They maintained a fairly close relationship as she grew into an adult, caring for her own four young children.
Cheyenne Palochak, her foster sister, says Anita lit up a room and was full of humor. She says she is grieving the loss of a true sister.
As police search for a suspect and a motive in the case, anyone with information is asked to come forward.
