ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — The determination of 2-year-old Cody Wyman of Attleboro is going viral.
His parents, Keith and Tonya Wyman, are sounding the alarm with a video showing how their son was able to potentially put himself in danger.
The toddler was able to climb up a pool ladder, which is designed to be un-climbable, in order to keep a child from getting into a pool and drowning. The way the ladder is designed to be locked, there are slats in the door which young children can still climb, Keith and Tonya Wyman said.
In April, a young boy was found dead in his neighbor’s in-ground pool in Woonsocket. Had Cody Wyman been forgotten for a few moments, his parents said he would have ended up falling into the pool.
The Wymans said they were able to grab their son before he put himself in danger, but they caught it on camera because they wanted to show other parents how easy it is for a determined child to climb over and circumvent the safety mechanism.
The store where the family bought the swimming pool ladder offered them another in exchange, but all the units in stock had similar designs. The Wymans now want to talk to the ladder manufacturer to push for a design change.
