ERIE, Pa – It’s not golf season, but it sure looked that way in Downtown Erie today. More than a thousand people turned out, to tee off for a great cause.
Elaborate costumes, a lot of beer, and a miniature golf course stretching through 17 bars, the 20th annual bar stool open takes over Downtown Erie.
Laura Eaton, Executive Director of MECA says, “We have a lot of people that fly in from all over the country for this. We’ve even had as far away as Japan and Australia. We’ve had professional football players playing! So you really never know who you’re going to meet up with when you come and play the Barstool Open.”
With their golf clubs in hand, Erie’s creativity was shining bright, like the detailed costumes…
“Well, they watched Top Gun last night… a little bit of Lethal Weapon and they are the four fathers,” explains Jennifer Wagner, a Barstool Open participant.
There was also a group that dressed up as Erie’s Snowmaggedon 2017.
The bars even getting in on the fun, completely transforming their spaces.
Each of the 17 bars created their own putting green, giving the players a challenge at each of the stops.
“Big Bar! Yeah! They’ve got a nice.. they have like a.. they have an Olympic thin gin there… three different things, it’s pretty cool,” says John Hickman, a participant.
Sharpe explains her favorite, “It’s like a snow…ski resort I’m assuming?”
Teams of golfers take a swing at it, each hole at a different bar. While it’s a full day of endless fun, all of the money raised goes to a great cause.
Eaton says, “MECA serves people with disabilities in the community, adults and children. We run a senior center. We run a baseball program for people who have disabilities.”
Thanks to the more than 1,200 participants, organizers are hoping to raise upwards of $40,000 this year. All of that money staying right here in Erie.
