A body was found in the rubble of last night’s apartment fire in Meadville, according to Crawford County Coroner Scott Schell. Schell tells us the body belonged to a man with no ID. He also tells us no autopsy will be performed.
Flames ripped through the building leaving nearly a dozen people without a place to live and one person dead.
There were 13 apartments in the building; a building that was built back in 1864 and is listed on the Crawford County Historical register.
11 people lived inside and as of earlier, all but one was accounted for.
The first call went out around 1:45 this morning. One firefighter told us by the time they arrived on scene, flames had already taken over the building; those flames shooting high into the night sky.
The third floor had collapsed into the second floor.
The owner of the building, John Kleffel says he saw something on the security camera, then it went black. He says the fire probably started in “…the second-floor bedroom by the main entrance. We have security cameras in the house. I live here, just walked thru the office and could see these cameras for the house start to flicker then disappear”.
Heavy equipment will be brought in to demolish the house.
That work is underway, but at a slow pace because they were looking for the person who was inside while they took the building down.
