Bomb squad called to bank following robbery, package deemed safe and area secured

UPDATE 3:50pm:  Millcreek School District’s latest memo: “The Millcreek Township School District is not the only recipient of these threatening emails. Unfortunately, they have been received at several locations across Pennsylvania. It is a statewide issue. Please be assured that the Millcreek Police Department is responding to our concerns and working with us, as well as with other agencies.”

The bomb squad was called to a Liberty Street bank and now Erie Police are searching for a robbery suspect. Jackie Roberts joined us from the scene with more information.

We were at the Northwest Savings Bank in the 3400 block of Liberty Street, where yet another bank robbery took place this morning.  It’s the second at this bank in less than a month.

Shortly after 10am, Erie Police received a report of a bank robbery.  The suspect demanded money from the teller and left behind a package which, he said, was an explosive.  That’s when authorities called the bomb squad to the scene.

Bank officials followed protocol and evacuated the building.  After about an hour, police crews determined the package was not an explosive.

Police say one teller did get a good look at the suspect and they’re trying to track down his location.

The suspect left from the bank on foot, but authorities are not sure if he had a vehicle waiting.

The bank is expected to reopen this afternoon.
