Many are saying it’s already feeling like the holiday season at Millcreek Mall with the new Boscov’s finally in business.
Cars weaving throughout the parking lots of the Millcreek Mall, desperately looking for a parking spot… It’s a common sight around the holiday shopping season, but not usually in early October.
Diane Walker, Assistant Manager of Gymboree, says, “I think it’s going to be great for the mall, we’ve needed it and it’s much better when we have the stores all filled… There has been a tremendous response to Boscov’s, and a much more tremendous response actually coming into the individual stores as I’ve seen.” The excitement for the new Boscov’s Department Store is spilling into the surrounding shops.
Gymboree is a children’s retail chain with more than 1200 stores nationwide. “Our day yesterday was tremendous,” says Walker, “with the amount of people that came passing through and found the sales.” Walker estimates at least a 15 to 20 percent increase in the number of customers from an average Thursday.
Even locally owned businesses with storefronts in the mall have seen an uptick in customers since Boscov’s opened. Anne McCall of Heritage Wine Cellars tells us, “I have never been here when a big store has opened, but he has, so he told us be sure we have everything stocked up and ready to go because we would be getting more business.”
Heritage Wine Cellars, a family-owned business out of North East has had a store-front in Millcreek Mall for a few years. McCall says a neighboring store gave her advice to prepare for the opening of Boscov’s, and she’s glad she listened.
“We get more traffic in! More people come to that store and then they see us and they come in and buy some wine!”
So, if you’re planning on stopping at the mall to visit the new Boscov’s this weekend, be sure to give some of the other stores a look-through, as well.
