Cambridge Springs High School Graduate takes 2nd at Soap Box Derby international race

Local News
A Cambridge Springs High school Graduate took 2nd place at the All American Soap Box Derby in Akron Ohio.

18 year – old Sarah Watson told JET 24 Action News, she is very proud of taking 2nd place on an international stage. She said she’s been competing for years.

After a series of races on Saturday in Ohio, Sarah inched closer and closer to winning the International Soap Box derby Championship. ” I got more nervous with each run, but it was just one good run, and we will see where it  goes,” said Sarah when describing Saturday’s competition.

Sarah beat out about 60 other drivers. Her fastest run down the 989 foot  hill was about 29 seconds

All racers have to build their own car.  When it’s race time, drivers put their helmets on, and sink back into the car.
” There’s a steering wheel and a break, so it’s not a lot of steering because you’re trying to just keep it straight,” said Sarah.

Sarah qualified for the race by winning Erie’s race in June.

Sarah will be racing into Edinboro University this fall with the $2,000 scholarship she scored by placing as runner up in the derby.
