Cardinal faces sexual abuse charges

Local News

Shockwaves through the church today after Cardinal George Pell becomes the highest ranking Vatican official ever to be charged with sexual abuse.

One of the Pope’s closest advisors, Cardinal Pell, is considered to be the third highest ranking official at the Holy See.  Pell’s career has been dogged by claims that he covered up child sexual abuse by other priests.

In one case, Pell is accused of moving one pedofile priest from parish to parish instead of reporting him.  Later, claims surfaced that Pell, himself, was an abuser; claims he has always strongly denied.

Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton, Victoria state Police, says, “Cardinal Pell is facing multiple charges in respect of historic sexual offenses, and there are multiple complainants relating to those charges.”
The court will decide next week whether to release the details and the nature of those multiple charges.  Pell will be required to show up in court in Australia on July 18th.
